EVIDENCE-BASED APPROACH TO TOILET TRAINING

When it comes to skills that are necessary for a student to be successful in a school or home setting, toilet training is generally at the very top of that list. At ACI Learning Centers we employ a wide variety of evidence based approaches to toilet training. These approaches include both bowel and urine control, as well as independence in remaining dry and clean. Our training will focus on the basic principles of toilet training and allow us the chance to discuss the many different approaches to teaching this extremely important skill. I encourage anyone looking to begin toilet training with their child, solve any toileting issues such as regression in the toileting process, or anyone with questions on toilet training to join this extremely informative review of the research based approaches to toilet training.

BEHAVIORAL APPROACH TO FOOD SENSITIVITIES

Many children have specific foods they will eat and others they refuse to eat. These food sensitivities create difficult situations for families due to limitations in the student’s diet. At ACI we employ a wide variety of evidence based interventions to assist with consuming a variety of foods as well as decreasing the problem behavior associated with eating these less preferred foods. Our discussion will focus on providing families the tools they need to help their children be successful at consuming many different types of foods, as well as the skills necessary to increase the variety of foods consumed.

Learning the Behavioral Approach To Language [EnDED]

Language is an essential skill necessary for social interaction, including making friends and communicating our wants and needs. Many individuals with autism struggle in this area in that they are not able to vocalize their requests. As a result many children may engage in severe challenging behavior in order to communicate these needs. A better understanding of the different types of language, and how they play a role in an individual’s life, is necessary to improving the foundational skill set of language. This webinar is designed to help better understand the different classifications of language from a behavioral standpoint, with a focus on B. F. Skinner’s Verbal Behavior, and to promote the use of vocal and verbal communication. We will discuss the research and tools used to further improve the verbal behavior of individuals with a diagnosis of autism.

Independent Play & Appropriate Leisure Skills [ENDED]

Individuals with autism can learn to engage with toys, activities, and peers appropriately. At ACI, learning to play appropriately with toys and engage with peers is a primary focus of our programming. We look at what is motivating for our students and use a behavioral approach to teach engagement with a wide variety of toys for our younger students. Play skills are systematically taught and then generalized so the student can engage with peers. Our older students are taught a wide variety of independent leisure skills to increase their interests and learn hobbies, increase active engagement and socialization in their community. We will discuss the research-based tools we have developed to increase the success of our students to learn appropriate play skills and socialization with peers.
